A Surprise Inside

On Mondays at lunch, we fast and pray for women and men to bear the image of God in their unique ways, and for marriage to be given to those who desire it.

There it is sitting on the front porch in all of its cardboard glory, a package! Surprise or not, it’s a thrill to open a box and uncover the contents. One day this past week there was a package on the porch awaiting my arrival home from work. I was barely inside the door when I began tearing into the box. Even though I knew what was inside I was excited to open my purchase. As I explored the contents I discovered a surprise inside! This particular company allows customers to choose three free samples with each online order. However, one of my free samples grew in size. I thought I was getting a small vial of perfume, but instead I received a large bottle of cologne. When I looked on the website, this particular bottle sells for $67, hardly the price and size of a free sample!

Christmas is just a few days away, a time when we commemorate the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Through Jesus’ birth we are given the gift of everlasting life and woven into the tapestry of divine purpose. You may know the contents of this gift very well, opening it each year with thankfulness and nostalgia for the many Christmas’ you’ve celebrated this gift. But what if this Christmas Jesus wanted to surprise you with something extra in His gift to you?

Perhaps you need an extra “scent” of His love or grace as your heart has taken some dings in 2015. Maybe your joy is complete in Him, but He just wants to knock your socks off with an extra surprise. Whatever the condition you find your heart in this Christmas season, Jesus has a gift for you that will far exceed your expectations.

You may wonder what happened with my cologne surprise. Through an email, a call to customer service, and a trip to the store (all in the name of honesty) I was told just to keep the cologne. My brother has benefited quite a lot from being related to me!

May the aroma of Christ penetrate your heart and soul this Christmas!

Merry Christmas!
